Why Every Pilates Instructor Should Start with the STOTT PILATES® Intensive Mat-Plus™ Course

Written by Saulo OuverneySTOTT PILATES® Lead Instructor Trainer | Founder of Sole Pilates | Official Merrithew® Host Training Centre

If you're considering becoming a Pilates instructor, one of the first questions you'll probably ask is:"Should I start with the Reformer course or the Mat course?"

The answer is simple.

Although the Reformer is one of the most recognisable pieces of Pilates equipment, the Intensive Mat-Plus™ course provides the educational foundation that every great instructor builds upon. It develops your understanding of movement, biomechanics, observation and teaching skills before introducing the additional challenge of spring resistance and moving equipment. At Sole Pilates, an Official Merrithew® Host Training Centre, we believe understanding movement always comes before mastering equipment. Led by STOTT PILATES® Lead Instructor Trainer Saulo Ouverney, our instructor education is designed to develop knowledgeable, confident Pilates professionals who understand why they teach each exercise—not simply how to perform it.

Why Does the STOTT PILATES® Education Pathway Begin with Mat?

The STOTT PILATES® education pathway has been carefully designed to build knowledge progressively. The Intensive Mat-Plus™ course is much more than learning a sequence of Mat exercises. It introduces the teaching principles and movement concepts that underpin every other STOTT PILATES® course.

·       Understand the Five Basic Principles.

·       Observe posture and movement quality.

·       Analyse alignment and common movement compensations.

·       Deliver clear verbal and tactile cueing.

·       Modify exercises for different abilities.

·       Design safe, progressive and effective Pilates programmes.

These teaching skills will support you throughout your journey into Reformer, Cadillac, Stability Chair, Barrels, Advanced courses and Injuries & Special Populations.

Understanding Movement Before Adding Equipment

One of the greatest strengths of Mat training is that it teaches you how the body moves against gravity.Without springs assisting or resisting movement, you'll develop a much greater appreciation of body awareness, control, alignment and stability.Rather than relying on equipment, you learn to observe how clients organise their movement, recruit muscles efficiently and respond to physical challenges. This understanding becomes the foundation upon which every future piece of equipment is introduced.

The Mat Course Teaches You to Think Like an Instructor

Many people believe the Intensive Mat-Plus™ course is simply about memorising exercises. It isn't.It's where you begin developing the mindset of a Pilates instructor.

·       Movement observation.

·       Exercise analysis.

·       Verbal cueing.

·       Hands-on corrections.

·       Client progression.

·       Exercise modification.

·       Programme design.

·       Contemporary biomechanics.

These are the skills that separate knowledgeable instructors from those who simply teach choreography.

Saulo's Perspective

Saulo Ouverney is a STOTT PILATES® Lead Instructor Trainer, founder of Sole Pilates and former educator at Merrithew's Corporate Training Centre in Toronto. During more than 20 years of teaching, he has educated Pilates instructors throughout Europe, Asia and North America.

“I often describe the Intensive Mat-Plus™ course as planting the seed of the STOTT PILATES method. It gives students the opportunity to understand how the body moves against gravity, and that understanding becomes one of the true foundations of body awareness and movement improvement. The students who fully embrace the Mat course develop a much deeper understanding of the Five Basic Principles and how they influence every movement. When they later progress to the Reformer, they aren't starting again—they're transferring principles they already understand onto a moving carriage with spring resistance. That allows them to progress with greater confidence, greater understanding and ultimately become stronger instructors.”

Why This Foundation Makes Better Instructors

The Reformer is one of the most versatile and effective pieces of Pilates equipment ever developed. However, equipment should enhance your understanding of movement—not replace it.

·       Alignment.

·       Breathing.

·       Core organisation.

·       Pelvic placement.

·       Scapular stability.

·       Movement quality.

·       Observation skills.

·       Teaching confidence.

Rather than learning movement principles and equipment simultaneously, they are able to focus on applying principles they already understand.
